I was hoping to get lots of reading and writing done this weekend but turns out that didn’t really happen. I was sick last night and all of today.
Though I did get to watch a movie on Friday night. I stayed in because I was exhausted and saw The Good Night. It stars Penélope Cruz, Martin Freeman, Simon Pegg and Gwyneth Paltrow. I was expecting something good since the star lineup was pretty strong. I was heavily disappointed. It was pathetic.
It’s basically a cheap British rip-off of Science of Sleep. Gary (Martin Freeman) is a self-pitying loser who becomes obssessed with a girl – who appears in his dreams – named Anna (played by Penélope Cruz) He has a not so terrible life – he works with music, has a girlfriend (Dora – Gwyneth Paltrow) who is succesful. His bestfriend is a pretty huge jackass – Simon Pegg and Gary seems to be jealous of him.
So he becomes obssessed with lucid dreaming. He meets Mel – Danny DeVito, a type of lucid dreaming instructor, who is also kind of a lame guy with regards to life acheivements. I have to say though Danny DeVito is the one redeeming part of the film. He’s the only entertainment. For the mostpart the characters are completely boring and lame. I even began to hate them towards the end. The bickering between Gary & Dora is so uncomfortable to watch and the weird dream scenes have no substance. The only good thing about the movie was the music. It was good and made watching this terrible film at least bearable.
If you want something creative and interesting that has to do with dreams vs. reality, watch Science of Sleep. It’s creative, whimsical and the characters are much more interesting and lovable.
