School is making my head spin! My third exam of the week is tomorrow and I’m really nervous. So obviously I’m stressed. But today, despite my high stress level, I am also super happy. Why?
Because today begins Vegetarianism month! I’m sure it’s also a month for other things (Thanksgiving, Halloween etc.) but Veg month is something I wanted to mention today. Because today is the 1 year anniversary of me being Vegetarian! :D One year already! I can’t believe it!
I have to say, I feel so much better, so much healthier and I feel like I’ve discovered so many new foods and restaurants!
So I’ve got a few cookbooks lying around as well as a few of my favorite dishes that I’ll be sharing with you all randomly throughout the month. I’ll also make posts here and there about Veggism. I’m not a vegan, I also eat fish, so some hardcore veggoids might shun me for that, but I’m extremely proud, because I had the willpower to do it and I will continue to do it!
So today, I’ll share the story of how it all began.
It’s been a while that I’ve been interested in environment, in animal rights and so on and so forth. And I was fed up with eating meat. I never liked red meat, but it was SO hard to decide to give up chicken and turkey and such. So I decided I would start my veggie journey the 1st of October for vegetarianism month. I knew Thanksgiving was only a little while away and if I could go without turkey on Thanksgiving I could do ANYTHING. And I did it. It was hard, but now I really don’t even care. So how did I look at that delicious meal and watch everyone eating and not want to jump on the damn thing and eat it all? I thought of my birds! I am a bird lover. I absolutely LOVE my birds, they’re my little feathery children in a way. My oldest bird is around 5 years old. She spent a huge chunk of time with me keeping me company with all that’s gone on in the last five years of my life. She’s awesome and though she’s feisty I love her to bits! So when I looked at that turkey, I saw my feisty little Newton (that’s her name!) and
didn’t think twice about never touching that stuff again. I would never eat Newton and so I won’t be eating any other birds anytime soon either.
I’m not someone who preaches about vegetarianism. It’s MY choice. I do it because it felt right for me. I do think that the entire world would benefit if we all went with a plant/fish based diet. But, even if a lot of people make the change, it’s impossible to coordinate all of the world’s activity. The same goes for so many things: car usage, fossil fuel use, pollution, waste, overconsumption etc. So if someone asks why I do it, I tell them. But only if they ask. And surprisingly, a lot of people have asked. Some have been ignorant and rude, some have been honestly interested (and that’s the majority!). There are also a lot of people who go for a almost meatless diet, they’ll eat meat only a few days of the week. I’m all for it!
I just want to say, for anyone else who is celebrating a year, or 6 months, or even 1 week of being vegetarian, congrats! And don’t feel like you’re missing out! There’s so much to discover!
And don’t feel bad if you’re not vegetarian! I don’t want to make anyone feel left out. I know a lot of non-veggies love vegetables and I know every time I put effort into a yummy meal everyone appreciates and loves it no matter who they are and what they eat normally!
Also because Canadian Thanksgiving is coming so soon (I have to cook! And I will take photos if I find my camera!) I’d like to call attention to an awesome organization called ‘Adopt A Turkey.ORG‘
I urge everyone to do it! I know I’m going to!

I love red meat. Granted, I don’t eat it that often but I do whenever I can get my hands on it. That being said, I respect vegetarians and to a certain extent I wish it were something I could do. My diet is so poor it’s ridiculous. And, I’ve noticed that when I eat better I feel better. I could see myself giving up meat some time in the future, but I don’t think I’m ready to just yet.
Happy vegetarian anniversary!!!!
I’m about 95 percent vegetarian and just about ready to commit to 100%. My daughter is vegan and though I couldn’t be that restrictive with my diet, I certainly respect her decision.
I love the two book choices you’ve offered here. Although I certainly don’t miss summer yet, by the time you do the drawing I sure will! Thanks for having the giveaway!
I was a vegetarian for ten years. Eventually, I had to eat meat again, because I have so many food allergies that I was no longer able to limit my diet with vegetarianism, too. :(
